Renal Internships
Our renal internships began in Barbados but will now take you across the world to work with patients in Uganda via telehealth. Our internships are not just geared to give interns exposure and experience in the dialysis setting; they are also an important way patients receive comprehensive care.
We make sure our students are well prepared to engage with this special population through our course and orientation. We offer a wide range of options, from our flexible online courses to the mode of the internship and the number of weeks students would like to complete. Our online program allows students to strengthen their knowledge and clinical skills from the comfort of their home. Our course/modules are filled with case studies, research assignments and quizzes that will help you understand CKD before you meet your first patient. Then you'll have the opportunity to assess, make recommendations and educate patients via zoom or phone with the guidance of our preceptors.
You'll get the best of all worlds with our hybrid internship as your studies progress from our online course, to meeting patients via telehealth and then traveling to Barbados to work in our clinics in person. We'll support you every step of the way as you gain skills and knowledge that gives you a foundation to become an exceptional clinician.
Students will have the opportunity to spend two or more weeks working with adult hemodialysis patients and the renal staff in Barbados. In addition, their experience will be heightened with our cultural immersive program that takes them around Barbados to meet its special people, places and to enjoy its Caribbean cuisine.
Culturally Immersive Experience
Students who choose to complete the in-person internship in Barbados will enjoy several culturally immersive activities aimed at getting them familiar with Barbados, its geography, culture, people and food. It's an exciting experience of discovery, adventure and learning.

Tours: We specially select tours that help students experience the beauty of Barbados. Most of the tours are food focused, like the Barbados Bridgetown Tour that takes you through this vibrant community of open markets, street foods and souvenir shops.

Activities: Cooking with local chefs has always been a huge highlight for our students. We can also schedule basket weaving or volunteering in a soup kitchen.
​
Hikes: Barbados is filled with beautiful places to hike, like the Flower Forest, Walker's Reserve or Coco Hill. Not only will you view tropical splendor, but you'll learn about the local flora and agriculture in Barbados.
